In 2012, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving was designated as Giving Tuesday in the United States. Henry Timms initiated this movement at the 92nd Street Y in New York, with the co-founding organization being the United Nations Foundation, supported by BLK SHP (Black Sheep). The vision was to create a global day of philanthropy, inspiring millions to donate to those in need.
Over the years, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global phenomenon, spanning 75 countries and encompassing a multitude of charitable causes. At Our Little Roses, we understand that true empowerment isn’t just about granting power or authority; it’s about helping a girl discover her inner strength.
Our journey towards empowerment begins with nurturing a strong sense of self-worth, instilling the belief that every girl is deserving of love, respect, and dignity. This transformation hinges on cultivating strong, loving relationships and providing access to quality education. We firmly believe that educating a girl is a powerful investment, as it serves as a catalyst for addressing poverty and extremism, fostering societal development and growth.
Leah Witcher Jackson, Associate Dean and Professor of Law at Baylor University School of Law, beautifully articulates this in her paper, “Educate The Women and You Change The World: Investing in The Education of Women is The Best Investment in a Country’s Growth and Development.” Investment in the basic and higher education of girls and women not only equips them with knowledge and skills but also instills the confidence to take on leadership roles in government, business, and society.

This event will feature our Executive Director, Wendy Bourgault, along with the Assistant to the Executive Director of Our Little Roses Ministries in San Pedro Sula, Ms. Mayra Arguelles. Four remarkable graduates of our program will join them: Heidy (Graduate of HFBS, about to start in the R.E.S.T. Program and university to study nutrition), Dayana (R.E.S.T. Program scholar studying medicine at the Catholic University), Kensy (About to graduate HFBS and begin her R.E.S.T. journey), and Aylin (our first Brad Thomason Scholar, returning to Our Little Roses to complete her law degree). These inspiring young women will share how the sponsorship program has impacted their lives, allowing them to obtain an education and the resources needed to become productive, engaged women.
